Celebrating 155 Years of Presbyterianism in Trinidad and Tobago – The Moderator Speaks – Jan/Feb 2023

By the time this issue of the Trinidad Presbyterian reaches you, the busyness of the Christmas season would have ended and the New Year 2023, would have rung through with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.

This year is a significant one for our beloved Presbyterian Church of Trinidad and Tobago (PCTT). After 155 years, the PCTT continues to make a distinct contribution to the promotion of spiritual and moral values through evangelism and education not only within the Presbyterian community but also in the wider community of Trinidad and Tobago.

Undoubtedly, and despite some errors of the past, the PCTT has made an invaluable contribution to the transformation and development of many individuals.

Indeed, it is cause for thanksgiving and, therefore, necessary that we reverently remember with gratitude the vision, undaunted spirit and sacrificial service of our fore-parents and the pioneers of the PCTT.

The theme chosen for the PCTT 155th Anniversary Celebrations is an adaptation of the theme of our global ecumenical partner, the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC) 2025 General Council,

“Persevere in Your Witness as Disciples of Christ”.

This theme is a prophetic call to the church and offers hope to God’s people who have persevered and demonstrated resilient faith for the past 155 years, especially throughout a Global Pandemic.

The challenges that have arisen because of the pandemic, over the past few years, have presented the PCTT with new and exciting opportunities for ministry, and with new opportunities to envision the next steps that we can take as a faith community called to serve in love and hope.

May we be inspired by one another’s witness and the pastoral care we extend to all of God’s creation.

I pray that God will bless us all with a vision to persevere in our witness as Disciples of Christ!

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:1-2) NRSV.
Happy 155th PCTT Anniversary
